The real reason you’re not reaching your goals (and what to do about it)

Overcoming obstacles – the game of reaching your goals

Every path to a meaningful goal comes with obstacles. Some are visible, like a lack of money or job experience. Others are hidden, like doubt, procrastination, or the belief that we don’t deserve success. If you feel stuck on your journey—you’re not broken. You’re just facing what every ambitious person encounters.

At Catapult Your Career, we believe obstacles aren’t signs to quit. They’re signposts for growth.

The two types of obstacles – external and internal

External obstacles are things outside your control: not enough money, limited access to opportunities, or not knowing the right people. These are real. But they’re rarely what stops us.

Internal obstacles are beliefs, habits, and patterns we internalize over time. They’re sneaky because they don’t feel like obstacles—they feel like “just the way I am.”

Examples:

These thoughts aren’t truths. They’re personal myths—internal scripts shaped by past experiences, family beliefs, and emotional pain.

Why you must face the inner roadblocks

Your inner world is your operating system. You can’t install a thriving career on outdated beliefs. Want to be a confident leader? A creative entrepreneur? A fulfilled professional? Then you need an identity—and habits—to match..

One of our participants thought she had no talent, based on bullying she experienced in third grade. She wasn’t consciously thinking this. But it quietly sabotaged her self-promotion until she rewrote her inner story.

The WHOOP method – your plan for any challenge. Here’s a science-backed strategy you can use today:

This method is called mental contrasting, and it boosts motivation and problem-solving by training your brain to expect and overcome resistance.

How to transform internal obstacles

You don’t overcome limiting beliefs by analyzing them to death. That’s avoidance. Here’s what works:

  1. Awareness – spot the belief or behavior that blocks you.
  2. Embodied practice – uses body-based tools (e.g., breathwork, dynamic meditation, vagus nerve exercises).
  3. Storytelling – reframe your experiences to give them meaning.
  4. Behavior shift – take new action aligned with who you want to become

“Limiting beliefs are like invisible roadblocks. When we overcome them, we don’t just move forward—we become more of who we truly are.”
