How To Choose a Career Path With Too Many Interests?

5 min

If you’re like many young people today, you might find yourself interested in a lot of different things but unsure which path to pursue. Maybe you’re worried about picking something that won’t lead to a good career, or you’re afraid of making the wrong choice altogether. This fear can be paralyzing, leaving you feeling stuck and uncertain about your future.

But here’s the good news:

There’s no such thing as a wrong choice—seriously.

One of the most important things to remember is that every experience you have adds value. Take, for example, someone we worked with who studied sociology but ended up thriving in marketing and event management. The skills they gained from sociology were incredibly useful in their new field. The key is to make the most of every experience—even if it doesn’t feel like “your thing” right now, those skills will likely come in handy later on.

Know when to pivot

It’s equally important to recognize when it’s time to move on. Moving forward doesn’t mean starting from scratch; it means building on what you’ve already learned. Each step you take brings you closer to finding what truly excites you.

University isn’t the only path to success

A lot of young people expect that their time at university will define their future career. But the truth is, many successful professionals didn’t find their calling in the classroom. In fact, in our work with over 1,000 young people, about 60% found their career paths through internships, side projects, or extracurricular activities—not directly through their field of study. This means that your future isn’t confined to what you study in university; it’s shaped by the experiences you seek out.

Want to learn how to choose the right university and make the most of your experiences? Join us at the Catapult Your Career Summer Camp from August 15 to 19 in Gudevitsa. You’ll gain valuable insights while having a blast!

Too many interests? Here’s how to choose

The first step in narrowing down your interests is to map them out. We’ll guide you through this process at the summer camp, helping you create a clear picture of your passions and how they intersect with your skills.

Next, we’ll explore how these interests and skills connect to specific activities, professions, or roles. On the second day of the camp, we’ll dive deep into real-world applications, helping you see the potential career paths that align with what you love.

Finally, we’ll introduce you to a simple but powerful tool to assess which skills, interests, and related activities are most likely to succeed—taking into account current trends and future opportunities.

Afraid to make a decision? Here’s what you need to know:

Decision-making can be daunting, especially when it feels like the stakes are high. But remember:

Uncertainty is normal, it’s common to feel unsure, but deep down, you probably know what excites you the most.

The sooner you act, the better the longer you wait, the harder it can be to make a decision. But don’t worry—if you’re not 30 yet, you’ve got plenty of time!

Just start – sometimes, the best way to figure things out is to dive in. Taking action builds confidence, and after a few tries, you’ll likely find your groove.

Every experience counts – whether or not you land on the “right” thing immediately, each experience will help you grow. Overcoming challenges and building confidence is the true key to success. Just look at the journey of any successful person—you’ll see that their “right” path often came after a series of different experiences.
